Saint Patapius and lake Vouliagmeni Private Tour
This tour includes a visit to the Monastery of Blessed Patapius and Lake Vulyagmini. At a distance of 14 km. from the town of Loutraki, on the road to Perachora, on one of the spurs of the Geranian Mountains, above the calm waters of the Corinth Canal, at an altitude of about 700m. above sea level rises the majestic monastery of Blessed Patapius.
The Holy Monastery of Agios Patapios in Gerania is located 14 km from Loutraki and belongs to the Holy Diocese of Corinth, Sicyon, Zemenos, Tarsus, and Polypheus. The monastery was built on the slope of the peak at a height of 650 m around a small cave, which was originally used as a skete, but then, by the care of the clergy and laity, took the form of a pavilion.
144 spirally carved steps lead to its territory. It was built in 1952 by Metropolitan Procopius of Corinth in honor of the monk Patapius, who devoted his whole life to serving God. Currently, the cave of Blessed Patapius is located in the northwestern part of the monastery and has an altar carved into the rock. Inside the cave, Byzantine frescoes of the 13th century have been preserved. Remarkable frescoes also adorn the new Church of the Assumption of the Virgin. There are currently 40 nuns living in the monastic cells.
Next, you have to get acquainted with the unique creation of nature, the lake with seawater Lake. Vouliagmeni. It was formed as a result of tectonic processes. The waters, much more saline than the open sea (renewed by the action of the tides every six hours), are shallow at first and then deepen sharply. They are considered very warm and allow you to swim until late autumn. The lake is connected to the sea by a narrow strait. On its shores, a settlement of the I and II periods of the Early Helladic period was found. Its length is two kilometers, its width is one kilometer, and its depth is presumably 40 m. This is an unusually picturesque place surrounded by mountains. Around the lake, numerous taverns invite visitors to enjoy delicious and fresh seafood, a variety of Greek cuisine against the backdrop of the unique beauty of the lake.
